Christian Palmer British-Australian
“I like to choose animals that have an edge about them, animals that are representative of an outsider. From this perspective, I make sense of my own internal dialogue and the irony of the human condition.”
Born in London, Christian Palmer is an Australian-based artist whose creative journey has taken him across the UK, Malta, Asia and Australia.
With a background in fine art and graphic design, Christian’s practice evolved through an exploration of painting, illustration and stencil art, ultimately leading him to the dynamic world of urban contemporary art. Since settling in Byron Bay in 2001, he has developed a distinctive visual language that brings together the traditions of fine art with the raw, expressive energy of street art.
Christian’s work is renowned for its striking portrayals of animals, often depicted as unconventional or misunderstood characters. Drawn to subjects that exist on the fringes, he uses animals as a lens through which to explore the complexities, contradictions and ironies of the human condition. His subjects are brought to life through expressive imagery and unexpected juxtapositions, inviting viewers to reconsider their own perceptions and the world around them.
A defining feature of Christian’s practice is the interplay between image and text. Incorporating lyrical phrases, familiar expressions and fragments of thought in a childlike, graffiti-inspired style, his works balance humour with poignancy. These seemingly simple words often carry deeper meaning, creating a dialogue between the animal subject and the human experiences of identity, belonging, time and the search for understanding.
Working across canvas, wood and other surfaces, Christian combines the techniques of traditional painting with the immediacy of contemporary street art.
His distinctive approach has earned him international recognition, with exhibitions across Australia, Europe, Asia and the United States, and his works held in private collections around the world. Through his evocative imagery and thought-provoking narratives, Christian continues to challenge convention, offering an unconventional and often deeply human perspective on life.
