Anne Clifton Australian, b. 1965

Overview
“Vetrograph play at the intersection of an intuitive drawing process and the physical and chemical reactions and interaction of coloured glasses. Central to this is an exploration of relationship and inter-relationship; where one layer or drawn line of colour reacts with or against another, where colours fold and meet, separate or pull each other apart.”

Clifton is known for her distinctive artistic vision, which merges the traditions of ceramics with innovative glassmaking techniques. Her unique approach has earned her a respected place within the contemporary art community, celebrated for both technical skill and conceptual originality.

Originally from Dwellingup, Western Australia, Clifton began her creative journey with a strong foundation in ceramics. While working as a technician in her university's ceramics department, she witnessed the installation of its first glass furnace—an experience that profoundly influenced her trajectory and ignited a deep interest in glass as a medium.

Her practice reflects a seamless integration of ceramic sensibilities with an experimental approach to glass and conceptual art. This interplay of tradition and innovation defines her aesthetic and continues to shape her evolving body of work.

Clifton has exhibited and undertaken residencies across Europe, Australia, Asia, and the United States. A former president of Ausglass (the national body for Australian glass artists), she is also a co-founder of Glass Manifesto, a collaborative studio practice with artist Peter Bowles.
