Peter Watts Australian, b. 1963
"I have the freedom with paint to be the author of unpredictable, dramatic and sometimes breathtaking weather events."
Peter Watts is an Australian landscape artist whose work explores the fleeting interplay of light, atmosphere and weather across the vast skies and rural landscapes of southern Australia. Renowned for capturing transient moments in nature, his paintings evoke a profound sense of place while balancing careful observation with subtle abstraction.
Peter draws inspiration from the dramatic cloud formations, shifting light and expansive agricultural landscapes that define southern Australia. His paintings interpret the ever-changing character of the landscape through nuanced explorations of atmosphere, colour and movement, distilling complex natural phenomena into compositions that are both evocative and timeless.
Peter's work has received significant national recognition. He has been a finalist in the prestigious Glover Prize in 2021, 2022, 2024 and 2026, receiving the People's Choice Award in 2022 and the Hanger's Award in 2026. Also in 2022, he was awarded Best in Show at the Camberwell Art Prize in Melbourne, affirming his place among Australia's leading contemporary landscape painters.
Before dedicating himself to painting full-time, Peter spent more than three decades as an internationally awarded creative director. This background continues to inform his sophisticated understanding of composition, light and visual storytelling, qualities that underpin his distinctive artistic practice.
Working between realism and abstraction, Peter creates landscapes that transcend the descriptive, inviting viewers to experience the atmosphere, energy and emotional resonance of the Australian landscape. His work is held in private and corporate collections and has been exhibited extensively throughout Australia and Singapore.
